This revival of the name ‘The Central Call’ was inspired by the recent dedication of the Lucyville Highway Marker and a long overdue family reunion.
The original owner, editor and publisher of the newspaper entitled ‘The Central Call’ was my great uncle Grant Dungee. The Highway marker was dedicated to honor R. T. Coleman and Shed Dungee (Grant Dungee’s father), two Cumberland County Virginia men who were born into slavery but after being freed went on to become leaders in Cumberland County and in Virginia. That dedication was the inspiration for reviving the name and purpose of ‘The Central Call’. You can read more about these men in the, ‘The Road to Lucyville‘ article on this website. Also read more about Grant Dungee by clicking the ‘To Learn More about Grant Dungee’ link on the homepage.
‘The Central Call’ is a news and information website and was intended to be an information resource for news and events in central Virginia, but the country has taken a turn that is eerily reminiscent of some concerns that where present 100 years ago and written about by Grant Dungee in ‘The Central Call’. This lead us see the importance of including news and events not only in Virginia but in the entire nation.
As we deliver the news, inform you of people, places and events of significance and pay homage our history, we can not avoid the lens of our life experiences or our heritage, so many of our articles will focus on how the news and events impact the African American community and our businesses.
One of our concerns with the mainstream news media today is that the information delivered is at the very least incomplete, often contains willful incompetence or at the worst is bias. In some cases it is a mixture of all three. But at the end of the day the public does not get the accurate, complete and honest information.
In addition to gathering information ourselves we use a number of resources. We choose these resources because their information is detailed, complete, informative, and it allows us to deliver accurate information to our readers. You will find these resources listed at the bottom of the ‘Homepage’.
Additional Editorials: From time to time you will find additional editorial articles addressing current issues, events and stories that invoke the need for additional thought and focus.
While the current news and events are covered on the homepage, you will find additional news, events and local history on the ‘Local News and Events‘ page and additional national articles, videos and links on the ‘National News‘ page, as well as past articles that are still relevant to current events and can add context.
There are people in our community that are making their mark on society, people from our past who helped to shape what we have become and were the foundation of many of the rights we enjoy today. There are places that have historical significance and new places that will help continue those traditions, as well as create new traditions, experiences and opportunities. You will find their stories and information in the ‘People and Places’ section in the center of the homepage.
On the ‘Black Owned Businesses’ page there are links to businesses and business listing sites. As we gather more information we will add more links, products and services. Now more than ever we want to help promote and support black owned businesses.

As for the Reunion
We are all aware of the great migration when many black families forced by hardship, lack of work and intimidation, moved to the north and west to find work, to escape the restrictive Jim Crow laws and the dangers from southern hate groups.
On April 19th, 2024, no matter where we had gone, no matter how far we had gone, no matter what we had been through.
We found each other and we came home.
